How We Conserve Land

Across America, nonprofit land trusts – including Athens Conservancy – are leading the way to conserve natural lands, protecting climate-resilient habitats and carbon-storing forests, safeguarding water quality in streams and lakes, and strengthening local communities

Southeastern Ohio has among the most beautiful and biologically diverse landscapes in the country. Athens County’s gorgeous hills and forests are a precious and irreplaceable asset that supports environmental and human health in our region. The breathtaking natural scenery is treasured by our local community and by visitors from around the state and beyond.

Since 2002, Athens Conservancy’s mission has focused on permanently conserving the lands around us. We protect nearly 3,200 acres of mostly forested land in the Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio, with over 2,100 acres open to the public to explore and enjoy

Athens Conservancy protects land primarily in two ways – by acquiring land to establish nature preserves, and by working with landowners to protect their land with conservation easements.

Nature Preserves

Athens Conservancy owns 17 nature preserves in Athens County, which are open to the public to explore in all seasons for hiking, birdwatching, trail running … and simply embracing the tranquility of nature. Our 12 miles of foot trails offer everything from easy hikes for families to challenging treks up steep hills, though deep forests, and along high ridges. Visit the Preserves page for information.

Conservation Easements

Athens Conservancy works with environmentally passionate landowners to legally protect their property forever. We currently hold 14 conservation easements, encompassing more than 1,400 acres in Athens County and adjacent counties, and protecting forests, farms, fields and meadows.
