Vinton Furnace is part of a forest land complex that also includes the Vinton Furnace Experimental Forest to the north. These lands were formerly known as REMA, the Raccoon [Creek] Ecological Management Area, and were Mead-Westvaco timber lands before that. These were part of the experimental forest lands that were part of a contract between Mead and the US Forest Service starting in 1965. |
To reach Vinton Furnace Wildlife Area, take OH-32 19 3/4 miles west from US-33 at Athens to OH-160 in Vinton County. Turn right on OH-160. The wildlife area is from 1.3 to 4.7 miles after the turn (on both sides; there is some border on the road on one side before and after this).
