Hikers on the John Knouse Trail in Canaan Preserve can now enjoy two new benches placed along the trail, thanks to an Eagle Scout project undertaken by Nathan Deering from local Boy Scout Troop 53. The benches were constructed in early August, with the troop hauling in all materials and building them themselves. The scouts are looking forward to further Eagle Scout project opportunities. Nathan’s other passions include writing and producing his own music, having released his own album Hollow Grounds.
The idea for benches at that spot came from volunteer Jean Vandervaart of the Buckeye Trail Association, who helped build the trail.
Board Member Chris O’Bara said, “The benches are a wonderful addition to the Athens Conservancy Trail system. These benches allow hikers to rest and enjoy a beautiful setting. This task completed by Nathan Deering as part of his Eagle Scout Project and the entire Troop 53 community demonstrates outstanding commitment to the continued support in outdoor recreation opportunities.”
Board member Phil Cantino added, “Nathan’s benches offer a scenic and peaceful resting spot about halfway along the trail, with a view of a rock shelter and the sound of a waterfall in the winter and spring.”
Board members Chris O’Bara and Dawn Handley will host a hike of the John Knouse Trail Saturday, Nov. 4, at 1 pm to check out the benches and admire the trail’s beauty along the way. All are welcome to join us!
