Carey Snyder lived with her husband Mark Barsamian and their son Zach in a small house at the edge of Athens, bordering on a large expanse of wooded land that includes Sells Park, Strouds Run State Park, and numerous preserves established by the Athens Conservancy. Their lives were perennially enriched by those woods: walking there with newborn Zach in a baby carrier, going on countless hikes and runs, swimming, fishing, boating, camping with groups of Zach and his friends, collecting pawpaw fruit, joining in trail building and maintenance, hosting an annual New Year’s Morning hike with friends.
Carey passed away in March 2025 at the age of 56, ending a 19-month battle with breast cancer. Her appreciation of the woods continued to the end. In January, just two months before she died, Carey hiked over 100 miles, much of it in those woods, as part of a month-long hiking challenge. It was during one of these hikes that Carey expressed to her husband her wish to leave behind a significant gift to Athens Conservancy. Please consider joining Carey in supporting the Conservancy.
