Reach for the stars this GivingTuesday, and help us create a stargazing preserve!
We’re delighted to be taking part in GivingTuesday on Nov. 30 – a global day of generosity that inspires people to come together in ways that enrich and transform their community.
This #GivingTuesday we aim to raise funds to create a wonderful place for stargazing … just outside of Athens in our new Deep Hollow-Dark Skies Preserve.
Our goal is to raise $8,000. Please consider making a donation here.
With your help, we’ll create parking areas and viewing sites high on the ridge-top, making a spot for looking skyward, to search for constellations, watch a meteor shower, or just ponder the wonders of the vast universe.
George Eberts, Ohio University astronomy professor, says, “A lot of people ask me where’s a good place to stargaze around here? This project will create a place close by, where you can drive up, get out and set up your lawn chairs or telescope, and have a good place to view the dark, night sky.”
Deep Hollow-Dark Skies Preserve, established a year ago, is comprised of 110.6 acres in Athens County’s Carthage Township, about 13 miles east-southeast of Athens. The Deep Hollow-Dark Skies name emphasizes the preserve’s diverse topography, reaching from a clear stream at the bottom of the gorge, to the high ridge-top that provides wonderful night-time celestial viewing far from light sources.
You can help create this new stargazing spot in our local community, a place for friends and families, students and scholars to ponder the infinite universe and connect with nature.
This GivingTuesday, help us reach for the stars!
