Athens Conservancy wants to showcase an original work of nature-related art from a talented artist from Appalachian Ohio. Deadline to apply is July 9.
We are looking for an “emerging artist” (ie an artist early in their career) from Ohio’s Appalachian region for our Spectacular Appalachia branded item. Funded by a grant from Ohio’s Winding Road, we will create an “experience product” such as tote bag, note card, or coffee cup, which will prominently feature the original work of art. The goal is to:
- Celebrate Ohio’s Spectacular Appalachian region
- Promote the outdoors, the natural world, and the native species surrounding us
- Raise visibility of Athens Conservancy and our nature preserves
- Encourage people to visit our natural areas and trails
- Support a local, emerging artist and promote their work
- Support Ohio’s Winding Road’s focus on a ”rising Appalachia”
- Support Athens County as a Creative County.
A committee from Athens Conservancy along with a local, professional artist will select the artist for this project. That artist will receive:
- A stipend of $400.00
- Publicity through the Athens Conservancy website and social media, announcements provided to local media, submissions to partner organizations such as Ohio’s Winding Road, acknowledgement in any product or materials on which the artwork is featured.
To be considered, please fill out the interactive application (click here to access the form) and complete it and submit it prior to the deadline of July 9. If you prefer, you can print it out and mail it to us at PO Box 2281, Athens, Ohio, 45701; be sure your submission is in our hands before the deadline.
Include images of two samples of your work and/or a link to your website, if you have one.
Some notes:
Who is eligible?
Any artist early in their career who hails from one of Ohio’s Appalachian counties
How will your artwork be used?
In exchange for the stipend and publicity about you and your work, your artwork will be used on a branded “experience product” that celebrates Appalachian Ohio, and may be given to donors and other stakeholders, or sold at special events. The artworks may also be used in related items, brochures, our website, social media, and similar materials. Recognition will always be given to the artist.
Timeline:
Artist to be announced: July 19
Collaborative discussions between artist and committee: July 22-Aug. 13
Final artwork to be completed: Sept. 3
What kinds of artwork are we looking for?:
- An original piece of work that has not previously been published or displayed
- A work that spotlights the natural world, nature, the outdoors, and/or species native to our region
- A piece whose image may be effectively transferred via printing or screen-printing to a product such as a tote bag, note card, or t-shirt, as well as on our website and social media
- A piece whose image may be reduced or enlarged to be used in various sizes; the original item should be horizontal in orientation and roughly 10 x 8 inches in size.
- A work that has not previously been used on a similar product or promotional materials.
- Artwork may be created using any medium that can translate to a printed item, including acrylic painting, watercolor, pen and ink, collage, printmaking, colored pencil, chalk, etc.
